Rattlesnakes On The Rise in The Coachella Valley

Coachella Valley, CA – Recent reports indicate a significant increase in rattlesnake sightings and encounters across the Coachella Valley during March and April 2025. Police and animal control records, coupled with community reports, highlight a rise in activity as temperatures warm.

In Palm Desert, local resident Emily Sanchez reported a rattlesnake sighting in her backyard on March 15. Animal control responded promptly, safely relocating the snake to a nearby reserve. On April 3, in Indio, a young boy was bitten while playing near a brush area in his backyard. He was swiftly taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he received antivenom treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

Cathedral City has also seen increased activity, with multiple sightings near hiking trails as reported by avid hiker Michael Tran on April 10. Authorities have issued warnings to residents and hikers to remain vigilant, particularly in areas with dense brush or rocky outcrops.

To prevent rattlesnakes from entering yards, experts recommend the following measures:
– Install snake-proof fencing around property perimeters.
– Keep grass trimmed and remove debris or woodpiles where snakes may hide.
– Seal any gaps under doors and around the foundation.
– Use natural snake repellents such as clove and cinnamon oil.

In the event of a snake bite, immediate medical attention is crucial. Here are the recommended steps:
1. Call 911 or seek emergency medical assistance immediately.
2. Keep the affected limb immobilized and at or below heart level.
3. Avoid consuming caffeine or alcohol, which can accelerate venom absorption.
4. Do not attempt to suck out the venom or apply ice to the bite area.

Authorities urge residents to exercise caution and report any rattlesnake sightings to local animal control for safe removal.
